“Precious” Movie is not being screened in all Theaters

Lee Daniel’s much talked about movie “precious” has finally been released. This week, it would only be screened at L.A. New York, Chicago and Atlanta. The film has gathered plenty of appreciation in movie festivals and now it would try to impress the general public. The movie is based on a sexually abused teenage African-American girl. It is basically based on the “Push” novel by Sapphire. The movie has already made a huge buzz in the film festivals and to put the cherry on the cake, Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry have been endorsing it heavily.
The film has already stirred up some controversies as it is being said that it’s not a good representation of African-American women, plus sized women, or urban youth in general. We found Loren Pritchett, a student at Virginia Commonwealth University posting a bit different opinion on www.thegrio.com about the movie. She thinks: “Movies like this are double-edged swords in the black community. On one hand it serves as an informative vehicle for discussion, but at the same time casts a label across the black community as a whole, leaving audience members of the opposite race throwing us all into one big troubled category.”
Politically incorrect film critic Armond White from NYC has given thumbs down and quite some nasty thrashing to the movie. He not only criticized Daniel, but also did not forget to take a stab on Perry and Oprah. White said “Precious is an orgy of prurience…Not since ‘Birth of a Nation’ has a mainstream movie demeaned the idea of black American life as much as ‘Precious’.”
But hey, these are opinions of other people, why don’t you go out to the theatres and decide for yourself and let us know?

I’m looking forward to the movie, “Precious.” It hardly represents the entire black community and . I think of the popularity of Toni Morrison and Alice Walker’s books and their directness in sharing the harsh realities of being a black american female (or really just being female and a target)…movies such as this give voice to the abused female in us all…and also how we can act as perpetrator’s as well….I’ve watched the trailer several times (I love Mariah Carey without all that makeup) with caucasian women and girls who have experienced “hell” in their lives and they related (and wanted to see the movie)….I have always been inspired by african american peeps, who despite all the hellish experience our world delivers, can still get up and dance with joy. We need more genuine inspiration in our culture not fake fantastical fluff..it’s like junk food for the mind, give me nuturing fare for my heart even if it hurts to watch.
