26/11 – one year past the biggest terror attack in India!

Remember the date 26th Nov’08? Can you recall something? Well…there’s no Indian who doesn’t actually recall 26/11 incident. And they still remember that with terror and remorse.

Additional Commissioner of Police Sadanand Date had his deadliest experiences that night. Date says that when he realized that the attack was from terrorists, he kept the terrorists engaged for more than 50 minutes, but could not stop them from moving out of the hospital, a moment he still regrets.

After a year passed since that night, wounds and terror are still fresh in his mind. He is polite enough to note that he is no superhero but he was not scared when the bullets and grenades hit him and his men.The siege that lasted for 3days or so shook Mumbai, Maharashtra and infact the whole India possibly forever. India-Pakistan relation was affected the most.

People of Mumbai want some measures to be taken by the government so that such terror attacks could be prevented in future. They feel that it’s high time now and enough is enough! Mumbai believes in looking ahead but ofcourse with preventions taken by the Mumbai police.

Hotel Taj finds its luxury corridor quiet and empty as international stores like Louis Vuitton, Burberry, Fendi etc are shut down and holding tight for now. But Taj is undergoing repair and reconstruction for the sake of its big name! The new wing reopened by the Taj is 80% done and is to open for public pretty soon. Ratan Tata had remarked after reopening the new wing, “You can hit us…we cannot be knocked down”, a statement signifying the undefeated spirit of Mumbai.

The GM of Taj, Karambir Kang lost his wife and two sons that night. And he will have nothing ever to heal this pain.
As new security measures, metal detectors and X-ray machines and many security personnel are kept in the hotels. However, the metal detectors are not very helpful with the alert sound getting lost in the presence of the large crowd.

Nariman House restoration work is also in full swing though the walls with the bullet marks are the witness of the terror nights.
P Chidambaram took the post of Home Affair Minister after Shivraj Patil resigned from his post. New attacks are under control now as the previous security was caught with some holes. A suspect from Bangladesh and a LeT militant were caught as a follow up after the 26/11 incident. Chidambaram gave orders to the Intelligence Bureau to go ahead to recruit 6000 field operatives and to open 20 counter insurgency schools to train the police all across the country.

All eyes are now set on the special court where the prosecution is gearing up to wrap up the case against Pakistani gunman Ajmal Kasab and two others who are charged with killing 166 persons. All these hearing and prosecutions kept on damaging the relation between India and Pakistan.

After a long one year, there are protest marches, candle light vigils, banners and posters by human chains as a remembrance of the 26/11 attacks. Mumbai, Maharashtra and India as a whole are still trying hard to cope up with the scary thoughts of the days. Though we are still bleeding with the wounds hard to dry up, we are brave enough o move ahead with time.
Life, as they say, goes on…
