The tapes that Liza made before her death in 1998 shed light on the harsh life she spent as a kid at the hands of her father and his gay lovers, including one incident in which her puppy was flung out of a moving car. Liza’s tapes were intended for a memoir, but she never wrote one.

They remained hidden until transcripts were tracked down to the south of France by Selina Hastings, who has written Maugham’s first authorised biography.

The tapes paint a vivid picture of a childhood tormented by the dysfunctional relationship of her parents, Maugham and Syrie.

Although the couple married after Liza’s birth, Maugham remained very distant and was far more attached to two men, Gerald Haxton, whom he met while serving as a medic during the First World War, and Alan Searle, a later companion.

Searle even tried to supplant Liza in the author’s will by casting doubt on her legitimacy.

The tapes show Liza recalling how, as an eight-year-old, she went for a drive on the French Riviera, where her father spent much of his time with Haxton, a friend and her puppy.

“Suddenly, in an act of possibly drunken, seemingly inexplicable cruelty, Gerald at the wheel scooped up the dog and hurled it out of the window. I was hysterical and tried to throw myself out of the car after it, but was held back,” Times Online quoted her as saying in the tapes.

Miraculously, the dog survived, and turned up several months later. Liza even reveals in the tapes that the “violent fights” between her parents sometimes left her feeling physically sick, and that she once covered her face in greasepaint to disguise her tears.

She admits: “I had quite the reverse of a happy childhood.”

Best-selling author and journalist Steven Dennis claims in a new book, ‘Britney: Inside The Dream’, that she stood to lose as much as 100 million dollars if she failed to honor the tour commitments that she made prior to her meltdown.

Dennis spent six months writing and researching the book, reports the Daily Express. Robert Baker, the studio director at the Millenium Dance Complex where Britney regularly trains, told him: "If Britney didn’t go on tour she could have been hit for 100 million dollars because she was contractually obliged for another album and another tour and there was a deadline.

"The whole contract was set up and a timetable was in place before Britney had her meltdown. "Had she quit and walked away then the recouped advances, penalties and accrued interest would have been near the 100-million-dollar mark – for someone estimated to be worth just 60 million dollars to 65 million dollars."

Since announcing her world tour, critics have voiced their concerns that Britney was taking part in a gruelling nine-month world tour at a time when she remained mentally vulnerable.

Legally, she has been under the control of her father since February because of her mental problems.

Dennis adds, however: "I think the chief reason behind her tour was to protect Britney – firstly, to return her to an identity and routine in which she felt safe and secondly to safeguard her financially."

The medic alleged he administered just 25 milligrams of Propofol into the bloodstreamof the singer. He will purportedly claim that Jackson later re-set the machine to increase the dosage that sent him into a cardiac arrest.

Medical experts have, however, cast a shadow of doubt over Murray’s claims, saying 25mgs of Propofol would not have been enough to put Jackson to sleep for sometime.

Dr Kathleen London, a US family practice physician, said: "Murray says he only gave 25mgs of Propofol. I don’t believe that. In order to induce sleep, 40mgs is needed." The Los Angeles Country Coroner recently ruled Jackson’s death as homicide caused by acute intoxication from Propofol and other conditions.

Spielberg, 62, who has previously directed Crichton’s ‘Jurassic Park’ and ‘The Lost World’, is set to produce and possibly direct the adventure film, set in 17th Century Jamaica.

The novel, ‘Pirate Latitudes’, which is set to be published on November 24, is about a daring plan to infiltrate Port Royal, one of the world’s richest and most notorious cities, and raid a Spanish galleon filled with treasure.

"Michael Crichton was one of our greatest storytellers who expanded all of our imaginations with his books, films, and television," the BBC quoted Spielberg as saying. "With the ER and Jurassic Park series, I enjoyed one of the best collaborations of my career. Now with Pirate Latitudes, I have the chance to be excited about bringing this new Michael Crichton work to the screen," he added.

David Koepp, who wrote the film versions of Crichton’s dinosaur novels, has also signed on to adapt the book. Besides Jurassic Park, Crichton also penned books like Congo and Disclosure, all of which were adapted into films.

His novels have sold more than 150 million copies worldwide.

"It’s little known but if Fearne is being spooked I would put my money on it being something to do with that tunnel," the Daily Star quoted a neighbour of the 28-year-old star as saying.

"About ten years ago builders renovating the cottage discovered the tunnel. "There were many theories going around about what it was built for but whatever the truth it seems there are some dead souls down there who still enjoy troubling the living," the neighbour added.

The 1989 film’s small screen version will have all the original characters.The Lakeshore Entertainment film company, which holds the rights to the black comedy, has confirmed that scriptwriters had already started work for the TV version of the flick.

The Los Angeles Country Coroner recently ruled Jackson’s death as homicide caused by acute intoxication from powerful anaesthetic propofol and other conditions.

The findings may result in criminal charges against the singer’s personal physician, Dr Conrad Murray, who administered the sedative to help him sleep, reports Sky News.

The Jackson family allegedly praised the actions of the coroner and cops and said it "looks forward to the day that justice can be served". Propofol and the psychoactive drug benzodiazepine were concluded as the primary drugs responsible for Jackson’s death in the coroner’s report.

Other cocktail of sedatives, painkillers and stimulant found in Jackson’s system included diazepam and ephedrine.

The coroner said the complete toxicology report remains sealed at the request of the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County District Attorney. Detectives have been probing the circumstances leading to death of the King of Pop, who died aged 50 on June 25 from a cardiac arrest at his Los Angeles mansion.

But questions have risen as to whether the demonstration was more about product placement and promoting promiscuity than AIDS prevention.

Contestants such as Miss Australia Rachael Finch and Miss USA Kristen Dalton took part in testing the condom’s limits by blowing them up until they burst.

They even filled them with water and learned how to conduct condom demonstration correctly, with just one "game" mentioning abstinence as a means to avoid AIDS.

"In preparation for the new Miss Universe to become an Ambassador for Youth AIDS and in the hopes that the contestants would return to their countries inspired to support HIV/AIDS initiatives, the contestants participated in an hour long peer education session," Fox News quoted a rep from PSI as saying in a statement.

"The session consisted of a discussion on HIV/AIDS and several peer education activities that are actually employed by our programs in the field. Often times, target populations are illiterate or of low literacy and we need to find ways to reach them through engaging activities that don’t rely on written materials.

"What we have learned is that youth more actively listen to their peers and role models, so we centre our activities through peer education and deliver messages of prevention through role models like the Miss Universe contestants.

"The winner and the remaining contestants have a unique opportunity to help reduce stigma, educate at-risk populations and empower youth and women to practice abstinence, to delay the first sexual debut, and if sexually active, remain faithful," the rep stated.

The role of Miss Universe is to champion AIDS/HIV awareness and in March the Miss Universe Organization officially partnered with PSI, which promotes itself as a world leader in HIV prevention and education.

PSI was actually founded by Phil Harvey, who is also President of Adam & Eve, the largest mail-order sex toy/pornography business in the country.

"The idea that playing games in order to spread HIV awareness is absurd. Millions all over the world are dying from this pandemic and the ‘Condom Olympics’ in no way emphasizes the severity of this issue which, by the way, is completely preventable," Alyssa Cordova of the Clare Booth Luce Policy Institute, which prepares and promotes conservative women, said.

"HIV doesn’t just happen; it’s caused by irresponsible behaviour like sharing needles and engaging in sexually promiscuous behaviour.

"Playing right into our culture’s obsession with political correctness, the Miss Universe organization downplays the only thing that prevents the spread and contraction of HIV that is 100 percent effective-abstinence-and perpetuates the lie that if you use a condom everything will be ok," she stated.

Cordova was also disturbed by the fact that PSI felt that "abstinence is not the right message" for some people.

"Apparently Miss Universe and PSI believe that some of us are so barbaric that it’s not even worth sharing the message. Not only is that insulting, it’s dangerous and irresponsible," she added.

Epstein, who sold records at his father’s shop, Nems, in Liverpool, became the band’s manager after hearing them play at the city’s Cavern Club.

"Everybody turned down the band, even though Brian promised they would become bigger than Elvis, and he finally got George Martin at EMI to change his mind and give them an audition," said a BBC report.

Epstein also managed other Liverpool stars in the 1960s including Cilla Black and Gerry and the Pacemakers. Brian Epstein died in 1967, aged 32, from a sleeping pill overdose.

"Yeah, I went through a tough spot where everything compounded on me, and it was like a perfect storm, like everything was happening to me at once," Time Out New York quoted her as saying in an exclusive interview.

"The show, travel and then this fairly routine surgery that went wrong-it’s still just healing. But I had to get through it without proper painkillers because I couldn’t take those during work. So it’s been a nightmare.

"I was down in the dumps about everything there for a while. Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom about things and have to get the most stressed-out just to feel better again. "I got completely stressed-out and couldn’t handle everything, and now I feel really in control," she added.

Asked whether she had an official nervous breakdown, Barton revealed that she had no idea what happened. "I don’t know. I don’t know. I had a friend who had a quasi-nervous breakdown, but I’m not sure it’s the same thing. I’m not sure I’m capable of a full-on nervous breakdown, but it was pretty bad," she said.

"It didn’t last that long. It was more about the pain. I have a newfound respect for people who have chronic pain. I started getting migraines," she added.

"I had my tonsils out. I was prescribed liquid Vicodin, a strong opiate like heroin, only available in America," the Sun quoted her as saying.

"When I swallowed that tiny dose I felt relaxed and contented. I thought, "I like the feeling this drug gives me". The prescription ran out, and that was the end of that.

"But, three years later, aged 16, I was at Hollywood club Las Palmas when an older guy I’d never seen before said, "Hey, want one of these?".
He had a prescription bottle of pills that looked like Vicodin. I took a small white pill and swallowed it. "

"I quickly felt I could talk to anyone. I was relaxed, happy and a bit tingly. It was the same feeling as when I had my tonsils out and I thought, "I’ve found my magic remedy". The next morning, I called the guy and bought two or three pills for about 20 dollars," she added.

The singer, who is the daughter of rock legend Ozzy Osbourne, spoke about her rehabilitation experience too.

She added: "They checked me into the psychiatric ward at the UCLA Medical Institution in LA, where years later Britney Spears would be sectioned.

"I was so frightened – it was full of crazy people. As I curled up in a tight ball, the air was filled with ear-piercing screams. I didn’t leave my room for five days. It’s one of the scariest things I have ever done, but also one of the best."

Columbia Records confirmed that the Feeding America charity would receive the US royalties from the album’s sale. The organization, which helps needy people with food, hopes to feed 1.4 million people with the album’s proceeds.

According to the warrant and affidavit for the August 21 raid on Mickey Fine Pharmacy in Beverly Hills, California, investigators were searching for records of medication that Klein allegedly prescribed to himself and then gave to Jackson.

A list of items seized during the search was filed on August 27 in California federal court, and it showed that investigators seized, "60 prescriptions, 29 patient profile print-outs, three copies of DEA Forms 222 (Order Forms) and copies of inventories of controlled substances."

According to the warrant for inspection and the affidavit for administrative inspection warrant, between January 1, 2008 and July 6, 2009, Klein self-prescribed 27 controlled substances, which he filled at Mickey Fine Pharmacy. Investigators believe that he gave the drugs to his friends, including Jackson, who died of an apparent drug overdose on June 25.

The 60 prescriptions and 29 patient profiles were all related to the investigation into Jackson’s death, with the patient profiles belonging to the singer along with the aliases he used.

Investigators used the Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System (CURES), a database of all schedule 2 through 4 drugs prescribed by doctors or dispensed by pharmacies or medical facilities in the state of California.

"The [CURES] report shows 27 prescriptions written by Dr. Klein in a self-prescribing capacity, specifically prescribing medication to himself, from March 2006 through May 2009," Fox News quoted the affidavit as stating.

"These prescriptions include the medications hydrocodone (Vicodin), modafinil (Provigil), diazepam (Valium), and injectable midazolam (Versed)," it stated. A CURES report for the pharmacy revealed the same self-prescribing information found in Klein’s report.

Self-prescribing controlled substances is in violation of California Health and Safety Code 11170, but it is not a criminal act. The penalties for self-prescribing include fines, and a loss of a physician’s DEA license to prescribe controlled substances.

She said: "I’m not a trained dancer. I did a little bit of gymnastic when I was 12; everything else it’s just me feeling the music. But I do have an unorthodox ways to approve my music or test it."

"When I’m in the studio and I’m producing my own music, [I've got to] make sure I connect to it at a physical level. My body has to move and my hips have to move and if I don’t see that kind of reaction, that physical reaction, then I know that something is not working," she added.
