Bollywood movies have been struck by diseases!

There seems to be a growing trend in Bollywood of making films with rare diseases as their theme. Of late, we have seen a lot of movies portraying their protagonist suffering from certain ailments. This new trend not only gives the audience something fresh but also raises social awareness to a great extent.

The trend primarily commenced with films like ‘Phir Milenge’(2004) & ‘My Brother Nikhil’(2005) that dealt with the sensitive issue of AIDS. Those films not only stirred our conscience but also cautioned us against certain social evils. Besides, they touched our emotional nerves & taught us not to ill-treat the victims of such cases. Then Amitabh Bacchan magnificently sketched the character of an Alzheimer’s patient in ‘Black’ (2005) giving us an in-sight into the lives of the memory-robbed. ‘Who Lamhe’ & ’15 Park Avenue’ dealt with schizophrenia but the film that brought tears into every eyes was ‘Taare Zameen Par’ (2007). Directed by Aamir Khan, the movie’s child protagonist Ishaan Avasthi (played by Darsheel) suffered from dyslexia and the heart-rending performances captivated each and all. Aamir again paved the way with ‘Ghajini’ (2008) in which he essayed the character of a man suffering from amnesia. And now, the latest offering ‘Paa’ that hits theatres on 4th December,2009 is about a 13-year old progeria-afflicted child(played winsomely by Amitabh Bacchan). The new year opens with yet another promising movie ‘My name is Khan’ in which Shah Rukh Khan fabricates the character of an autistic man.

These films are not only taking the spectators for an emotional-ride but also ensure that box-office keeps jingling. Besides, the social activists & NGO’s are more than happy. What more can you ask for?
