Time after time, the grassroots leaders of the movements he claims as his own criticize the way he goes about trying to solve problems. The RED Campaign is the most drastic failure, spending $40 million more on marketing than it raised in one giant GAP ad, while telling consumers that all you have to do to fight systemic problems like AIDS is buy some t-shirts. Bono's self-important leadership is painful to watch. The world would be a better place if he would only retire. That's why people are trying to tempt Bono to retire by raising a pot of pledged money that will go towards fighting AIDS, but ONLY once he retires from public life.
