The company director of Laird Assessors from The Wirral, Cheshire had said earlier, “Bring it on Burkha Barbie, I think this is a great idea”.

Barbie was first launched in 1959 by American businesswoman Ruth Handler and was paired with Ken, Barbie’s boyfriend in 1961.

Rosie Shannon, from Save the Children, said, “We are delighted Sotheby’s and the designer chose to auction the burkha Barbie dolls for our charity”. The money collected from the charity will all go towards the Rewrite the Future campaign which helps the conflict effected children across the world.

The movie which was released on Nov 6th 2009 shows an overweight, illiterate  African-American teen  Claireece “Precious” Jones played by Gabourey Sidibe who lives in New York with her horrible family. Her mother mentally abuses her while she is consistently raped by her father and even impregnated twice! It’s till the time she meets her high school Principal Mrs. Lichtenstein when she gets a hope to change her life to another direction.

She finds a new way to look at the world with her imagination and fantasies. While being raped, she begins to imagine herself shooting for a music video and she is the superstar there! When she looks at the photo album, she imagines the snaps talking to her. She looks at the mirror to see herself as a pretty blonde. She imagines living in another world where she is loved and appreciated by all unlike her real life!

Later she learns to read. She gives birth to Abdul, her second child by her father. But her mother intentionally drops Abdul and abuses Precious. It is then she leaves her house and starts staying with her son till her mother re-enter her life only to inform that her father has died of AIDS. She too learns that she is infected with HIV positive, but thankfully not Abdul. The film ends with her struggle to improve the lives of her family members.

Sadly, all “Precious” don’t really have the same luck. The recent case of Shaniya Davis is a pathetic and horrible repeat of the Hollywood flick only with a much dreadful twist at the end.

Some bloggers blamed the movie for media coverage of such a crime and have concluded that Shaniya’s case and alikes are all inspired from films like these.

Bradley said that the main cause of her daughter’s death is asphyxiation. As per reports said on Thursday, Shaniya was kidnapped and later raped before being strangled to death by her mother’s ex-boyfriend Mario McNeill. She was seen last with Mario in a hotel and the last video footage was caught on the hotel security system. The charges on Mario Andrette McNeill now are, first degree kidnapping, he is further charged with first degree murder and first degree rape as well of a child!
The 5 year old’s own mother, Antoinette Nicole Davis was also charged, with felony child abuse and human trafficking, related to prostitution.

Shaniya was the product of a one-night stand of her parents and was staying with Bradley all these years. It’s just a month back that she was moved with her mother though Bradley was not too eager. But her mother got a job and he was forced to let his daughter let live with Antoinette last month.

Shaniya’s dad Bradley Lockhart naturally seemed very upset throughout his interview with Oprah; his sister also joined and spoke in the interview.

He achieved the first recorded cure with penicillin, on November 25, 1930, when he treated a gonococcal infection in an infant.

In 1939, Howard Florey, an Australian pathologist, applied to the Rockefeller Foundation to study penicillin and other bacteria. Adnan was initially charged with three felonies: assault with a deadly weapon, battery and hit-and-run, but the first two charges were dropped as a part of his plea deal.

Adnan would be put on probation for 36 months, and must complete 52 weeks of anger management classes and 45 days of hard labor by community service.

TMZ gave a shocker when it reported that he was just sentenced to 45 days in county jail as a result.

According to Sin Chew Daily and Nanyang Siang Pau, 10-year-old Adi Putra Abdul Ghani’s mother Serihana Alias operates the two companies, which sell vitamins under the brand Adi.

The research has further heated up the question: what part of abnormalities picked up by the mammogram tests can actually threaten life?

Epidemiologist Dr Stephen Morrell of the University of Sydney and her colleagues studied cases in New South Wales and found that the number of women diagnosed with breast cancer and aged between 50-69 increased almost two times after tests began.

However, tests of women outside this age group did not show a similar leap.
 
The researchers concluded that tests were even showing up cases where cancer-growth was very slow.

“Some of those early-diagnosed cases would not manifest clinically during that woman’s lifetime,” ABC Online quoted Morrell, as saying.

He added that nearly 23precent to 29precent of all invasive breast cancers cases in NSW are “over-diagnosed”.

The researchers whose study centred on invasive cancer say that the current rate of 25precent over-diagnosis is the “price” that people must for the benefits of screening.

While admitting that over-diagnosis was a “very vexing issue”, Professor David Roder from the Cancer Council South Australia in Adelaide said: “I think there are equally rigorous studies that come to different conclusions.” (ANI)

The protein called Bak appears to be central to processes that cause oxidative damage to cells and lead to hearing loss.

The new findings will help point the way toward a new target for antioxidant therapies.

“Within the mitochondria these proteins cause life, but when they’re out they’re deadly,” said professor Christiaan Leeuwenburgh, Ph.D., chief of the biology of aging division at UF’s College of Medicine and a member of the Institute on Aging.

One theory of aging holds that free radicals damage components of mitochondria, the energy centre of cells. Such damage accumulates over time, leading to a destabilization of the mitochondria, which leads to release of certain proteins.

The cell death triggered by the escaped proteins lead to physical effects we associate with aging, such as hearing loss.

Bak is known to play a role in the weakening of the mitochondrial membrane. The more of the protein present, the leakier the mitochondrial membrane becomes, allowing harmful proteins to travel out into the rest of the cell.

During the study, researchers analysed whether absence of Bak would prevent the age-related hearing loss that is associated with the death of certain sensory hair, nerve and membrane cells in the inner ear.

Hearing tests showed that Bak-deficient middle-aged mice were found to have hearing levels comparable to that of young mice.

In addition, fewer of the critical hearing cells died, compared with so-called wild type mice that did not have the protein deficiency.

The study is published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. (ANI)

The 48 year old, hailing from Westmont Hill, Chicago, allegedly canned the stunning presenter while she was in a motel room in Columbus, blissfully unaware of her secret stalker, according to federal court reports.

The District Court, Los Angeles has reportedly slapped Barett with a felony charge for inter state stalking. The investigations are currently in progress and if found guilty on the aforesaid counts, he could face up to five years in prison.

The damning Andrews video, first made its way to the internet back in February, thereby landing the poor presenter who hardly had a clue of what was to follow, in a maelstrom of international consternation.

Now it appears that Barett will have to pay for what was clearly a case of an obsession gone too far.

After Google Chrome, the browser with over 30 million people using it regularly, Chrome OS is Google’s latest attempt to further its concept of browser-based computing, in which the traditional PC desktop is deemphasized in favor of a completely Web-based experience.

In other words, unlike other operating systems, Chrome OS uses HTML5, for bringing an application like experience right within the browser – without the need for installing anything. Got it now?

Google claims that Chrome OS boots up in only seven seconds. Chrome’s main difference is that applications and other materials that now exist on a user’s hard drive will instead live online.

The Chrome OS allows the reordering of tabs and you can create new windows and group websites/applications. The main aim of Google is the speed, simplicity and security. You can play music, send an instant message or show a quick video while browsing the Web or doing work. The on-screen interface of the operating system looked much like a browser. On top were tabs showing programs for e-mail, documents, a chess game, a book e-reader and more.

Google Chrome OS will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips and we are working with multiple OEMs to bring a number of netbooks to market next year.

Now, with the matter dragging on and no immediate verdict in sight, his lawyer has reportedly issued an emotional appeal to his Swiss prosecutors to grant him clemency on humanitarian grounds, citing the trauma and mental suffering that his family is going through.

Polanski, who was charged with having sex with a thirteen year old in Los Angeles in 1977, fled the United States to escape his arrest and subsequent trial.

With the specter of arrest hanging over his head, the Polish legend never made it back to the States, though he continued to make movies from outside.

He was even picked for ‘Best Director’ Oscar, for the holocaust drama ‘Pianist’, but he couldn’t accept it in person.

His lawyer Herv Temime was quoted as saying to ‘Le Figaro’ that, the 76 year old director has offered ‘very significant bail money, house arrest and other assurances to find freedom’ but ‘will not accept extradition to the United States.’

He further said his wife Emmanuelle Seigner, a singer and actress and their two children are presently copping a lot of psychological stress over this forced separation.

A Swiss court official meanwhile was quoted as saying that his latest bail plea is expected to be heard shortly.

However, his wife claims that the legendary director of ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ and ‘Bitter Moon’ fame has taken his detention without any malice or grudge, saying, “I’ve never heard him complain.”

Seems, his latest brush with the law is set to drag on for sometime yet.

Heidi Klum, the host and one of the judges of the show, complemented Irina, “Your line was sleek, modern and cohesive and it told a story.”

Earlier the judges had some issues with her all-black collection featuring oversized shawl collars, hooded sweaters, and highly structured heavy wool. But they praised her sense of showmanship and were all praises for Irina and her collection.
Carol Hannah Whitfield and Althea Harper stood runners up in the show. They were equally impressive, but then there has to be just on winner!

Irena’s walked away with the $100,000 prize money, a spread in Marie Claire and a Paris vacation on the horizon.

Authorities said they found Shaniya’s body in a rural part of a North Carolina highway on Monday. Shania was reported missing from her Fayetteville, NC mobile home park around 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10.

Shaniya was last seen around 5:30am that morning, her mother Antoinette Davis said. Shaniya was again seen shortly after at a hotel with McNeill, 29, her mother’s ex-boyfriend who was arrested and according to police confessed to her kidnapping.
Shaniya’s aunt said she had a tough time to let Shaniya live temporarily at her mom’s place. Antoinette Davis, her mother, is said to have neglected her child. She is charged with human trafficking and child abuse involving prostitution.

Fayettville Police Chief Tom Bergamine announced that the case will be tried in Cumberland County where Shaniya was reported missing instead of Lee County where her body was found. No other information was released further because the investigation is ongoing.

NASA’s Ask an Astrobiologist Web site, for example, has received thousands of questions regarding the 2012 doomsday predictions-some of them disturbing, according to David Morrison, a senior scientist with the NASA Astrobiology Institute.

“A lot of the submitters are people who are genuinely frightened,” said Morrison, who thinks movie marketers, authors, and others out to make a buck are feeding some of the fears.

“I’ve had two teenagers who were considering killing themselves, because they didn’t want to be around when the world ends,” he told National Geographic News.

“Two women in the last two weeks said they were contemplating killing their children and themselves, so they wouldn’t have to suffer through the end of the world,” he added.

Part of the worry, according to Morrison, is being fanned by a suite of Web sites created by the distributor for ‘2012′, the movie.

The sites appear to represent scientific organizations, press releases, and 2012 whistle-blowers, all intent on telling the “truth” about our upcoming doom.

Now, all the 2012 marketing sites display clear disclaimers that the contents are “Part of the 2012 Movie Experience.”

“But, those labels weren’t there from day one, adding to the suggestion that the doomsday scenarios might have some truth behind them,” Morrison said.

Conspiracy theorists often believe that world governments and those “in power” know all about some impending disaster, but are doing nothing to save the rest of us.

Now, thanks to the Internet, such theories can gain traction quickly and spread more widely than ever before.

According to Anthony Aveni, a Maya expert and archaeoastronomer at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York, “I got into an email dialogue with a high school student who was quite seriously concerned that the world was going to end. This person thought we were all going to die.”

“For a lot of people I think it’s almost kind of a parlor game. But there are also people who take it very seriously,” said University of Wisconsin historian Paul Boyer.

“What strikes me is the total lack of historic awareness that people who get caught up in these things seem to exhibit. The most elementary look at history shows such a series of these episodes that are then proven false,” he said.

“Yet despite that, there always seems to be a market,” he added. (ANI)

The groundbreaking discovery could offer a foundation for how tumour-forming genes interact, and may offer a drug target for cancer treatment.

“When cancer hijacks a healthy system, it can create tumors by causing cells to divide when they shouldn’t. Certain genes control the normal movement and growth of cells, and by studying how these genes interact, we can understand what is abnormal when cancer is present,” said Ian Chin-Sang, a developmental biologist at Queen’s and lead researcher on the study.

There is an important gene in humans called PTEN that acts as a tumour suppressor. When the PTEN gene function is lost, it can lead to cancers.

Another gene family, called Eph receptors, often shows high levels in cancers, but a connection between PTEN and Eph Receptors in cancer formation has never been shown.

The Queen’s study shows the remarkable relationship between these genes in worms.
    
When the scientists increased Eph receptor levels in worms, the PTEN levels diminished and the worms died prematurely.

When they decreased the Eph receptor level in the worm, the PTEN levels went up and the worm lived longer than normal.

The researchers believe that the same principals are applicable to humans.

“Obviously humans and worms look very different, but at a molecular level, they are very similar. In some instances, like the ones we are studying, the cellular mechanisms are so similar that the human genes can replace the worm’s gene,” states Professor Chin-Sang.

Next, the researchers are planning to take a closer look at the interaction of these two genes in humans.

The findings could lead to exciting breakthroughs in cancer treatment. (ANI)

A multitude of insights about life and death in Gaelic Ireland were gleaned following the discovery of an unknown medieval church and the graves of about 1,300 men, women and children who lived along the banks of the river Erne at Ballyhanna, Co Donegal, several hundred years ago.

The burial ground, which spanned several centuries, was found during the construction of the Ballyshannon/ Bundoran bypass in 2003.

According to a report in The Irish Times, a team of archaeologists and scientists from Sligo Institute of Technology and Queen’s University Belfast, who are involved in the Ballyhanna project, outlined their findings to date.

One of the most interesting discoveries was the remains of a young female, who lived about AD 800, whose skull showed evidence of brain surgery.

“We know that she survived the operation as the skull shows signs of bone growth after the hole was cut into it,” said Michael MacDonagh, a senior archaeologist with the National Roads Authority.

Also, Dr Jeremy Bird, head of the school of science at Sligo IT, explained that one of the most exciting aspects of the project is an investigation into whether cystic fibrosis was present in the population 1,000 years ago.

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder known to be an inherited disease of the secretory glands, including the glands that make mucus and sweat.

 Preliminary studies carried out by Prof Philip Farrell, an international expert on the disease, and the Sligo-based team have found that is possible to get ancient DNA from human teeth discovered at Ballyhanna.

This could provide evidence of cystic fibrosis in those buried at Ballyhanna.

According to MacDonagh, the unexpected discovery of a medieval church and so many ancient remains, dating back to the seventh century, was of major significance.

“It was an incredible discovery because it was completely unexpected. It is possible that because Ballyshannon suffered so disastrously during the Famine, that these burial grounds just fell out of local memory,” he said. (ANI)

The dataset was produced by the Advanced Along Track Scanning Radiometer and the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer on Envisat and the Spinning Enhanced Visible and InfraRed Imager (SEVIRI) instrument on the Meteosat Second Generation, using data from the Along Track Scanning Radiometer-2 on the ERS-2 satellite.

Some aerosols occur naturally, originating from sea-spray, wind-blown dust, volcanic eruptions and biochemical emissions from oceans and forests, while others are produced through emissions from industrial pollution, fossil-fuel burning, man-made forest fires and agriculture. 

They are important because they strongly affect Earth’s energy balance in two ways: they scatter and absorb sunlight and infrared emission from Earth’s surface, and act as condensation nuclei for the formation of cloud droplets.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), these effects tend to cool the planet to almost the same degree as carbon dioxide emissions warm it.

These estimates are uncertain, however, so more data are needed.

To investigate the usefulness of the dataset, pilot studies were carried out by six atmospheric modelling groups.

Results of the pilot studies were presented during ESA’s Atmospheric Science Conference held in Barcelona, Spain, in September.

According to Maria Grazia Frontoso, working on the development of the GLOMAP aerosol model at the University of Leeds in the UK, “GlobAerosol seems to be a very useful tool to address uncertainties in global models.”

Arjo Segers from TNO in the Netherlands compared GlobAerosol data with model predictions of desert dust and forest fires over the Iberian peninsular.

“The results of this study suggest that the GlobAerosol SEVIRI dataset is especially useful for investigating aerosol levels over water,” he said.

Still, more work is needed to address the problems highlighted in the intercomparison study of the models, and to improve the overall accuracy of the satellite aerosol data. (ANI)

The scientist in question is Georgia Tech City and Regional Planning Professor Brian Stone.

According to Stone, as the international community meets in Copenhagen in December to develop a new framework for responding to climate change, policymakers need to give serious consideration to broadening the range of management strategies beyond greenhouse gas reductions alone.

“Across the U.S. as a whole, approximately 50 percent of the warming that has occurred since 1950 is due to land use changes (usually in the form of clearing forest for crops or cities) rather than to the emission of greenhouse gases,” said Stone. 

“Most large U.S. cities, including Atlanta, are warming at more than twice the rate of the planet as a whole – a rate that is mostly attributable to land use change,” he said. 

“As a result, emissions reduction programs – like the cap and trade program under consideration by the U.S. Congress – may not sufficiently slow climate change in large cities where most people live and where land use change is the dominant driver of warming,” he added.

According to Stone’s research, slowing the rate of forest loss around the world, and regenerating forests where lost, could significantly slow the pace of global warming.

“Treaty negotiators should formally recognize land use change as a key driver of warming,” said Stone. 

“The role of land use in global warming is the most important climate-related story that has not been widely covered in the media,” he added.

Stone recommends slowing what he terms the “green loss effect” through the planting of millions of trees in urbanized areas and through the protection and regeneration of global forests outside of urbanized regions. 

Forested areas provide the combined benefits of directly cooling the atmosphere and of absorbing greenhouse gases, leading to additional cooling. 

Green architecture in cities, including green roofs and more highly reflective construction materials, would further contribute to a slowing of warming rates. 

Stone envisions local and state governments taking the lead in addressing the land use drivers of climate change, while the federal government takes the lead in implementing carbon reduction initiatives, like cap and trade programs.

“As we look to address the climate change issue from a land use perspective, there is a huge opportunity for local and state governments,” he said. (ANI)

The fins are made not of silicon, like conventional transistors, but from a material called indium-gallium-arsenide.

Called finFETs, for fin field-effect-transistors, researchers from around the world have been working to perfect the devices as potential replacements for conventional transistors.

In work led by Peide Ye, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, the Purdue researchers are the first to create finFETs using a technology called atomic layer deposition.

Because atomic layer deposition is commonly used in industry, the new finFET technique may represent a practical solution to the coming limits of conventional silicon transistors.

“We have just demonstrated the proof of concept here,” Ye said.

The finFETs might enable engineers to sidestep a problem threatening to derail the electronics industry.

New technologies will be needed for industry to keep pace with Moore’s law, an unofficial rule stating that the number of transistors on a computer chip doubles about every 18 months, resulting in rapid progress in computers and telecommunications.

Doubling the number of devices that can fit on a computer chip translates into a similar increase in performance.

However, it is becoming increasingly difficult to continue shrinking electronic devices made of conventional silicon-based semiconductors.

In addition to making smaller transistors possible, finFETs also might conduct electrons at least five times faster than conventional silicon transistors, called MOSFETs, or metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors.

“The potential increase in speed is very important,” Ye said. “The finFETs could enable industry to not only create smaller devices, but also much faster computer processors,” he added.

The finlike design is critical to preventing current leakage, in part because the vertical structure can be surrounded by an insulator, whereas a flat device has the insulator on one side only. (ANI)

The scientist in question is Neal Iverson, an Iowa State University professor of geological and atmospheric sciences.

He’s worked for three years on his big new machine, which is over nine feet tall, that he calls a glacier sliding simulator.

At the center of the machine is a ring of ice about eight inches thick and about three feet across.

Below the ice is a hydraulic press that can put as much as 170 tons of force on the ice, creating pressures equal to those beneath a glacier 1,300 feet thick.

Above are motors that can rotate the ice ring at its centerline at speeds of 100 to 7,000 feet per year.

Either the speed of the ice or the stress dragging it forward can be controlled.

Around the ice is circulating fluid – its temperature controlled to 1/100th of a degree Celsius – that keeps the ice at its melting point so it slides on a thin film of water.

As Iverson starts running experiments with the simulator this month, he’ll be looking for data that help explain glacier movement.

“For a particular stress, which depends on a glacier’s size and shape, we’d like to know how fast a glacier will slide,” Iverson said.

Glacier sliding is something that matters far from the ice fields. As the climate warms, Iverson said glaciers slide faster.

When they hit coasts, they dump ice into the ocean. And when those icebergs melt, they contribute to rising sea levels.

But, there’s a lot about the process researchers still don’t know.

“We can’t predict how fast glaciers slide – even to a factor of 10,” Iverson said. “We don’t know enough about how they slide to do that,” he added.

So, Iverson came up with the idea of a glacier in a freezer that allows him to isolate effects of stress, temperature and melt-water on speeds of glacier sliding.

While Iverson had a rough design for the simulator, he said that a team of three engineers from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory – Terry Herrman, Dan Jones and Jerry Musselman – improved the design and turned it into a working machine. (ANI)

Several nearby galaxies contain brilliant objects known as ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs).

They appear to emit more energy than any known process powered by stars but less energy than the centers of active galaxies, which are known to contain million-solar-mass black holes.

“ULXs are good candidates for intermediate-mass black holes, and the one in galaxy NGC 5408 is especially interesting,” said Richard Mushotzky, an astrophysicist at the University of Maryland, College Park.

The galaxy lies 15.8 million light-years away in the constellation Centaurus.

Using the European Space Agency’s orbiting XMM-Newton observatory, Tod Strohmayer, an astrophysicist at Goddard, and Mushotzky studied the source – known as NGC 5408 X-1 – in 2006 and 2008.

XMM-Newton detected what the astronomers call “quasi-periodic oscillations,” a nearly regular “flickering” caused by the pile-up of hot gas deep within the accretion disk that forms around a massive object.

The rate of this flickering was about 100 times slower than that seen from stellar-mass black holes.

Yet, in X-rays, NGC 5408 X-1 outshines these systems by about the same factor.

Based on the timing of the oscillations and other characteristics of the emission, Strohmayer and Mushotzky conclude that NGC 5408 X-1 contains between 1,000 and 9,000 solar masses.

“For this mass range, a black hole’s event horizon – the part beyond which we cannot see – is between 3,800 and 34,000 miles across, or less than half of Earth’s diameter to about four times its size,” said Strohmayer.

If NGC 5408 X-1 is indeed actively gobbling gas to fuel its prodigious X-ray emission, the material likely flows to the black hole from an orbiting star.

This is typical for stellar-mass black holes in our galaxy.

Strohmayer next enlisted the help of NASA’s Swift satellite to search for subtle variations of X-rays that would signal the orbit of NGC 5408 X-1’s donor star.

Swift detects a slight rise and fall of X-rays every 115.5 days.

“If this is indeed the orbital period of a stellar companion, then it’s likely a giant or supergiant star between three and five times the Sun’s mass,” Strohmayer said.

“Astronomers have been studying NGC 5408 X-1 for a long time because it is one of the best candidates for an intermediate-mass black hole,” said Philip Kaaret at the University of Iowa. (ANI)

The geochemical analysis provides new data for the Jurassic period, when very little is known about Central Africa’s paleoclimate, according to Timothy S. Myers, a paleontology doctoral student in the Roy M. Huffington Department of Earth Sciences at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas.

“There aren’t a whole lot of terrestrial deposits from that time period preserved in Central Africa,” Myers said.

“Scientists have been looking at Africa’s paleoclimate for some time, but data from this time period is unique,” he added.

Myers’ research is based on a core sample drilled by a syndicate interested in the oil and mineral deposits in the Congo Basin.

Myers accessed the sample – drilled from a depth of more than 2 kilometers – from the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren, Belgium, where it is housed.

With the permission of the museum, he analyzed pieces of the core at the SMU Huffington Department of Earth Sciences Isotope Laboratory.

The Samba borehole, as it’s known, was drilled near the center of the Congo Basin.

Myers’ results are consistent with data from other low paleolatitude, continental, Upper Jurassic deposits in Africa and with regional projections of paleoclimate generated by general circulation models.

“It provides a good context for the vertebrate fossils found in Central Africa,” Myers said.

“At times, any indications of the paleoclimate are listed as an afterthought, because climate is more abstract. But it’s important because it yields data about the ecological conditions,” he added.

While there was no evidence of terrestrial vertebrates in the deposits that Myers studied, dinosaurs were present in Africa at the same time.

Their fossils appear in places that were once closer to the coast and probably wetter and more hospitable.

Myers found minerals indicative of an extremely arid climate typical of a marshy, saline environment.

With the Congo Basin at the center of Gondwana, humid marine air from the coasts would have lost much of its moisture content by the time it reached the interior of the massive continent.

“There probably wouldn’t have been a whole lot of trees; more scrubby kinds of plants,” Myers said. (ANI)

It is already known that walking pace is linked to increased hospital admissions and the incidence of falls and disability. Now experts say walking slowly is “strongly associated” with an increased risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, including heart disease and stroke.

To reach the conclusion, researchers reviewed 3,208 men and women aged 65-85 over five years, reports The Scotsman.

In the study, published online in the British Medical Journal, experts monitored walking speed using a series of tests, including checking normal walking speed and the maximum speed people could manage without running.

Over the course of the study, 209 people died (99 from cancer, 59 from cardiovascular disease and 51 from other causes).

The authors, from University Pierre and Marie Curie in France, found: “Participants in the lowest third of walking speed had about a threefold increased risk of cardiovascular death, even when factors likely to influence the results were taken into account.” (ANI)

Herman Pontzer, assistant professor of anthropology in Arts and Sciences, worked with colleagues John R. Hutchinson and Vivian Allen from the Structure and Motion Laboratory at the Royal Veterinary College, UK, to bring a combination of simple measurements, rigorous computer modeling techniques and their knowledge of physiology in present-day animals to bear in a new study on this hot topic.

Using their combined experience, the authors set out to determine whether a variety of dinosaurs and closely related extinct animals were endothermic (warm-blooded) or ectothermic (cold-blooded), and when, where and how often in the dinosaur family tree this important trait may have evolved.

“I work on the evolution of human locomotion, using studies of living humans and other animals to figure out the gait and efficiency of our earliest fossil ancestors. When I realized this approach could be applied to the dinosaur record, I contacted John Hutchinson, an expert on dinosaur locomotion, and suggested we collaborate on this project,” said Pontzer.

“Our results provide strong evidence that many dinosaur species were probably warm-blooded. The debate on this issue will no doubt continue, but we hope our study will add a useful new line of evidence,” he added.

Studies of present-day animals have shown that endothermic animals are able to sustain much higher rates of energy use than ectothermic animals can.

Following this observation, the researches reasoned that if the energy cost of walking and running could be estimated in dinosaurs, the results might show whether these extinct species were warm or cold-blooded.

Pontzer and colleagues examined recent anatomical models of 13 extinct dinosaur species, using detailed measurements of the fossilized bony levers that limb muscles attached to.

From this, the authors were able to reconstruct the mechanical advantage of the limb muscles and calculate the active muscle volume required for each dinosaur to walk or run at different speeds.

The cost of activating this muscle was then compared to similar costs in present-day endothermic and ectothermic animals.

The results of both the simple and complex method were in very close agreement.

Based on the energy they consumed when moving, many dinosaurs were probably endothermic, athletic animals because their energy requirements during walking and running were too high for cold-blooded animals to produce. (ANI)

During the study on genetically manipulated mice, the research team was able to switch on and off the animals’ ability to form lasting memories by adding a substance to their drinking water.

“We are constantly being swamped with sensory impression,” says Professor Lars Olson, who led the study.

“After a while, the brain must decide what’s to be stored long term. It’s this mechanism for how the connections between nerve fibres are altered so as to store selected memories that we’ve been able to describe,” Olson added.

The researchers discovered that signalling via a receptor molecule called nogo receptor 1 (NgR1) in the nerve membrane plays a key part in formation of lasting memories.

When nerve cells are activated, the gene for NgR1 is switched off, and the team suspected that this inactivation might be important in the creation of long-term memories.

To test this hypothesis they created mice with an extra NgR1 gene that could remain active even when the normal NgR1 was switched off.

“Doing this, we found that the ability to retain something in the memory for the first 24 hours was normal in the genetically modified mice,” said Olson.

“However, two different memory tests showed that the mice had serious difficulties converting their normal short-term memories to long-term ones, the kind that last for months,” Olson added.

The scientists hope that their findings will eventually be of use in the development of new treatments for memory impairments, such as those related to Alzheimer’s and stroke.

The medicines designed to target the NgR1 receptor system would be able to improve the brain’s ability to form long-term memories.

The study appears in scientific journal of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. (ANI)
