The stubborn woman was then taken to the police station and a formal blood alcohol test was conducted which revealed a level of .6 alcohol.

Though it’s legal to drive if the rating is under .8, police can still bust you if you are driving really bad due to the intoxicant. She was released at about 5:30 a.m. after posting $5,000 bail.

The odd incident started with a 25-year-old Northern Territory man and a 23-year-old woman hiring a taxi to Dry Creek at around 7.45 in the morning.

Police claims when they reached the destination they demanded the driver to leave the car so they could have sex in the backseat.

Then they ordered the driver to get in the passenger seat and drove him to North Adelaide.

Once there, the taxi driver took the opportunity to call for help.

The couple then allegedly attacked the driver, punching him in the head and hitting him with a high-heel shoe, after refusing to pay the 72-Aus dollar fare.

However, cops managed to track them down, reports News.com.au.

Now they have been charged with aggravated assault, illegal use of a taxi and failure to pay the fare. (ANI)

The research team from McMaster University in Hamilton, ON, Canada found that women with asthma who were not taking oral contraceptives (OC) had lower exhaled nitric oxide levels (eNO), a marker of airway inflammation associated with asthma.

They studied 17 women with asthma during their menstrual cycles and found that individuals not using oral contraceptives (OC) had higher mean eNO levels than women using OC.

Moreover, among women not using oral contraceptives, an increase in estrogen levels was associated with a decrease in eNO, while an increase in progesterone was significantly associated with an increase in eNO.

The researchers believe that OC may have a potential role in the management of premenopausal women with asthma. (ANI)

Theatre chain heads insisted that a speedy release of the movie DVD during the holiday season will hamper ticket sales by keeping fans away from theatre.

Hence, the movie bosses had to tell the Movie executives to delay the release of “This Is It” on DVD until the New Year. Therefore, the Sony bosses extended the film’s limited two-week run to one to three weeks. It was reported earlier that Michael Jackson’s “This Is It” which earned $101 million around the world in just five days. In its opening weekend from 30th October to 1st November 2009, the movie ruled the U.S. Box Office, pulling $21.3 million.

The research, by Gregory Erickson of the Department of Biological Science at Florida State University, involved microscopic imaging of bone structure, which showed that the famously feathered fossil of the archaeopteryx grew much slower than living birds and more like non-avian dinosaurs.

The first Archaeopteryx skeleton was found in Munich, Germany, in the 1860’s and dating to 150 million years ago.

“For a long time, Archaeopteryx was considered the archetypical bird primarily because it had feathers, although it retained typical dinosaur features like a long tail and teeth,” said Mark Norell, Chair of the Division of Paleontology at the Museum and a o-author of the research paper.
 
“But the discovery of classical bird features like feathers and

wishbones have recently been found in many non-avian dinosaurs

blurring the line of what constitutes a bird,” he added.

Norell, Erickson, and colleagues looked at growth rate in

Archaeopteryx and in birds and dinosaurs up and down the family

tree by removing tiny, 250-micron chips from the long bones

(specifically thigh bones and one of the shinbones).

The Munich Archaeopteryx was sampled with the help of co-author

Oliver Rauhut of the Bavarian State Collection for Palaeontology

and Geology in Munich.

According to Rauhut, “The Munich specimen is one of the more

recently discovered specimens. Nevertheless, ‘cutting up’ this

fossil to take samples of the bones was almost considered

blasphemous until recently. But because the samples were very

small and were removed with great skill by our preparator, the

knowledge gained was more than worth the sacrifice.”

Surprisingly, the bones of the juvenile Archaeopteryx were not the

highly vascularized, fast-growing type, as in other avian

dinosaurs. Instead, Erickson found lizard-like, dense, nearly

avascular bone.

To explain the strange bone type, the researchers also examined

different-size species of dinosaurs that were close relatives of

Archaeopteryx, including Deinonychosaurs.

They then looked to colleagues in China for specimens of two of

the earliest birds: Jeholornis prima, a long-tailed creature, and

the short-tailed Sapeornis chaochengensi, which had three fingers

and teeth.

Next, the research team plugged bone formation rates into the

sizes of the Archaeopteryx femora (thigh bones) to predict its

rate of growth.

“We learned that the adult would have been raven-sized and taken

about 970 days to mature,” Erickson said.

“Some same-size birds today can do likewise in eight or nine

weeks. In contrast, maximal growth rates for Archaeopteryx

resemble dinosaur rates, which are three times slower than living

birds and four times faster than living reptiles,” he added. (ANI)

The breakthrough will pave the way for new insights into genomic function and expanding our understanding of how cellular DNA folds at scales that dwarf the double helix.

In a paper featured this week on the cover of the journal Science, they describe a new technology called Hi-C and apply it to answer the thorny question of how each of our cells stows some three billion base pairs of DNA while maintaining access to functionally crucial segments.

The paper comes from a team led by scientists at Harvard University, the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT, University of Massachusetts Medical School, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

“We’ve long known that on a small scale, DNA is a double helix,” says co-first author Erez Lieberman-Aiden, a graduate student in the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Science and Technology and a researcher at Harvard’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and in the laboratory of Eric Lander at the Broad Institute.

“But if the double helix didn’t fold further, the genome in each cell would be two meters long. Scientists have not really understood how the double helix folds to fit into the nucleus of a human cell, which is only about a hundredth of a millimeter in diameter. This new approach enabled us to probe exactly that question,” the expert added.

The researchers report two striking findings. First, the human genome is organized into two separate compartments, keeping active genes separate and accessible while sequestering unused DNA in a denser storage compartment. Chromosomes snake in and out of the  two compartments repeatedly as their DNA alternates between active, gene-rich and inactive, gene-poor stretches.

“Cells cleverly separate the most active genes into their own special neighborhood, to make it easier for proteins and other regulators to reach them,” says Job Dekker, associate professor of  biochemistry and molecular pharmacology at UMass Medical School and a senior author of the Science paper.

Second, at a finer scale, the genome adopts an unusual organization known in mathematics as a “fractal.” The specific architecture the scientists found, called a “fractal globule,” enables the cell to pack DNA incredibly tightly — the information density in the nucleus is trillions of times higher than on a computer chip — while avoiding the knots and tangles that might interfere with the cell’s ability to read its own genome.

Moreover, the DNA can easily unfold and refold during gene activation, gene repression, and cell replication. (ANI)

According to the study, appearing in an upcoming issue of the Clinical Journal of the American Society Nephrology (CJASN), exercise has significant health benefits for individuals with kidney dysfunction.

Many patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) die prematurely, but not from effects directly related to kidney problems. Because physical activity has known health benefits, Srinivasan Beddhu, MD (Salt Lake City VA Healthcare System and University of Utah), and his colleagues researched the question of whether or not exercise can help prolong CKD patients’ lives.

The study included 15,368 adult participants (5.9 percent of whom had CKD) in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III, a survey of the US population. After answering a questionnaire on the frequency and intensity of their leisure time physical activity, participants were divided into inactive, insufficiently active, and active groups.

On average, participants were followed for seven to nine years.

The researchers found that 28 percent of individuals with CKD were inactive, compared with 13.5 percent of non-CKD individuals.

Active and insufficiently active CKD patients were 56 percent and 42 percent less likely to die during the study than inactive CKD patients, respectively. Similar survival benefits associated with physical activity were seen in individuals without CKD.

“These data suggest that increased physical activity might have a survival benefit in the CKD population. This is particularly important as most patients with stage III CKD die before they develop end stage renal disease,” the authors wrote. (ANI)

However, after Geoffrey turned up in North Yorkshire, they got a telephone call on Monday to say their pet was alive and well despite his ten-hour journey by road.

“Geoffrey cannot even stand being in the car for two minutes, if he has to go to the vet he starts wailing when the car starts moving.

I can’t believe he’s travelled that far. He must have been beside him self,” the Telegraph quoted Nurse Cindy, who has had Geoffrey from being a kitten, as saying.

“I’m surprised nobody heard him,” Cindy added.

It is believed that Geoffrey might have hopped into the luggage compartment of one of the many coaches that pull up at nearby hotels and B&Bs in the tourist destination.

He is expected to travelled for an hour to get to the ferry port, for an hour over the English Channel, and then headed up on the slow coach ride to the North of England.

“All-in-all he must have been travelling for about 10 hours – it’s 326 miles. At least he went somewhere lovely. It has made it a whole lot nicer to come and pick him up,” Mum-of-two Cindy said.

“On the day he disappeared he had his breakfast and then wondered off as usual, he often goes to the local café because they give him titbits to eat.

“We feared the worst because he doesn’t even have a collar – he likes climbing trees and are scared he might end up choking himself. Thank God he was chipped,” she added.

She picked Geoffrey up from the vet on Friday along with her husband, Tim, 50, who is in the RAF.

Geoffrey was given a sedative to make his journey home a bit more restful.

Delighted Cindy said: “He looks a little bit thinner, but he looks OK. We are so pleased to have him back.”

It was Zac Archibald who found Geoffrey in a field in Whitby a week ago, and then took the cat home to his mum Chris, 49, and together they nursed him back to health.

Chris said: “We put posters up and asked around the village in the hope of finding his owners. After a couple of days we took him to the vet to see if he was chipped. I thought I was hearing things when they scanned him and found out he was from the Isle of Wight.”

Cindy said: “We are so grateful to the family who found him, they did a great job of looking after him for us. He was so happy to see us, and he looks really well. I can’t wait to get him home because our kids, Simon, 17, and Peter, 12, have missed him so much.”

RSPCA spokesperson Sophie Corless said: “Microchipping is recommended as an effective way of linking pets to owners, and increasing the chances of them being reunited if lost, stolen or they stray. Once you have had your pet microchipped you should register your details and keep them up to date.” (ANI)

According to Professor Lee Meadows, Ph.D., author of a new book titled The Missing Link: An Inquiry Approach for Teaching All Students About Evolution, School districts, politicians and church leaders have debated for decades as to whether Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution should be taught in schools.

Educators who have taught evolution often have come under attack by students, parents and local religious leaders.

“For too long evolution has been denied its place in science curriculum. School policies driven by misunderstanding and fear regularly displace widely recognized principles of science,” wrote Meadows.

“But without understanding evolution, students – no matter what their religious beliefs – will never achieve the level of scientific literacy they need to make sense of even everyday practicalities such as how human viruses work,” the expert added.

As a result of the conflict many teachers have resorted to one of two extremes to avoid arguments over the validity of evolution, says Meadows.

“This book attempts to take a middle-of-the road approach,” he added.

He suggests that teachers should convince students of the legitimacy of evolution and encourage them to examine the scientific evidence for evolution for themselves and guide them in exploring the scientific explanations for that evidence.

“Children have to understand evolution but they don’t have to believe it, and that is the key distinction that I have laid out in the book,” said Meadows.

“So if a child asks if God made the whale, it’s really an opportunity to talk about natural and supernatural explanations. You are not saying that one is better than the other, only that science is limited to natural explanations,” he added. (ANI)

Albert Marrion turned to court over memorabilia containing copyrighted photos after they were used “without permission” to sell books and DVDs based on the legendary group.

According to the New York Post, the snapper alleged he took the shots, thought to be the first promo ones of the band, in 1961, reports the Daily Express.

The Manhattan federal court said Marrion found the photos were featured “without permission” in four Beatles books and a DVD documentary available from Netflix, Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.

Memorabilia dealer Gary Schaeffer, on the other hand, alleged owning the rights to the 16 pictures since 2001. (ANI)

The company’s officials said that it has started working on a new Winnie the Pooh feature film, and hopes to release it in spring 2011, reports the Telegraph.

They will weave together five unfilmed Winnie the Pooh stories and promise to bring in same humour found in the original A.A Milne books.

John Lasseter, Disney-Pixar’s chief creative officer, added that the designers would also be using watercolour backgrounds seen in earlier films.

Burny Mattinson, who worked on the original Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree in 1964, has been roped in as lead story artist.

Lasseter announced the plans in London to Disney staff and journalists, emphasising that the film is for all ages. (ANI)

The Beatles comeback will start with remastered versions of 13 of late John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and late George Harrison’s studio albums.

The 170-pound box set is the first upgrade to the Beatles’ back catalogue since the music was released on CD 22 years ago, and it’s the first time every track is available in stereo.

A Beatles In Mono box is also set to go on sale the same day for 200 pounds, and, on September 9, the Fab Four will also make their video game debut in ‘The Beatles: Rock Band’.

The 50 pounds game lets players perform in a virtual Beatles band with 45 songs to choose from, and the series of games has already raked in 600 million pounds, with the Beatles edition cited to be the most popular yet.

As well as a huge selection of songs, it also recreates iconic moments in the band’s history from their first gig at the Cavern Club to the zebra crossing at Abbey Road and the record company rooftop where they staged their famous 1969 concert.

Experts believe the game will introduce a whole new generation of music fans to the Beatles, keeping the cash rolling in for decades to come.

“By encouraging players to become part of the band, the marketing people are introducing timeless pieces to a younger audience,” the Mirror quoted brand expert Jonathan Gabay as saying.

“But they’ve gone further still with nostalgic, highly detailed backgrounds. This will appeal to the older market, which will relish the old eras of the Swinging Sixties and psychedelic Seventies.

“So, in one masterstroke, they address failing sales of CDs as well as grabbing a new generation of Beatlemaniacs. They have been very shrewd,” he said.

The next stage in the Beatles masterplan is putting their tracks on iTunes.

A long-running legal dispute between Apple computers and Beatles firm Apple Corps, which is jointly owned by Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and the estates of John Lennon and George Harrison, has stopped their music from being available online.

However, XBox games console owners will now be able to download All You Need Is Love, making it the first ever-digital Beatles song, followed by The Abbey Road, Rubber Soul and Sgt Pepper’s albums.

And music business analysts believe the entire Beatles’ back catalogue will then be made available on iTunes, possibly in time for next Christmas.

Marketing strategist Michael Bayler says the excitement over the new Beatles releases, downloads, and game are testament to very shrewd management.

“Up to now, the Beatles’ copyright protection has been tight. For many years, the answer for using their music to promote goods was ‘No’,” Bayler said.

“If the music is harder to come by, the value will go up. If the Beatles music was everywhere, there would be a significant drop in the perceived value of the catalogue because of over-exposure.

“There is a perception of exclusivity with the Beatles which means they are still in demand and these developments will be hugely successful.

“Put it this way, if the Beatles’ music had been on every tampon, car and shampoo advert around the world for the last 30 years, how much impact would the album reissue or Rock Band game have? Not much.

“The very scarcity of The Beatles means that there’s a pent-up demand, which means that when they do come out the take-up is huge.

“There’s going to be recognition that music income isn’t coming from where it used to come from. It’s not just about radio play and CDs any more. If you’re looking to maintain your superstar status there, forget about it.

“Music sales have been severely reduced, so for The Beatles to continue as aggressively as they have been, they need to seek alternative avenues.

“The sales of games like Rock Band are phenomenal. And I think these decisions by The Beatles and those in charge of their back catalogue will do very well indeed,” he added. (ANI)

The Anyi people, based in Ivory Coast, crowned the star Prince Michael Amalaman Anohin to make him their king-in-waiting, and thought he was a god with magic powers who would eventually rule over them.

Tribal leaders went to the American Embassy with the demand that Jackson’s body be sent to them, but were left facing disappointment.

They recently buried his spirit in a funeral-style ceremony in the village of Krindjabo, in the Sanwi Kingdom in front of thousands of mourners.

"If the Americans or his family permitted us to bring the body here, we’d do what needs to be done," the Daily Star quoted tribesman Emmanuel Kassy Kofi as saying.

"It was Michael himself who tested his DNA, found this is where he came from and said it’d be good to find his family," Kofi added.

State health officials in California fear moviemakers may not be following regulations that require them to provide protection against the transmission of the disease on film sets.

The state Division of Occupational Safety was looking to begin a formal investigation after a woman recently tested positive for HIV just after shooting an adult film.

“Our concern is that we need to quickly get to the employer so that we can work with them to change their practices to ensure the proper safety measures are being taken to prevent the additional spread of HIV,” The

Daily Telegraph quoted agency spokesman Dean Fryer as saying. Los Angeles County health officials revealed 22 cases of HIV had been confirmed in industry performers since 2004.

Dr. Jonathan Fielding, director of the Los Angeles County Department of Health, said there were “persistent reports” about reckless practices.

Fryer added: “There is no reason these infections should be occurring if these employers are following these precautions.”

Producers had made condoms mandatory after an HIV outbreak in 2004 but following a rebellion from both actors and audiences, it was made optional.

Steven Hirsch, co-Chief Executive of Vivid Entertainment Group, one of the industry’s largest filmmakers, said: “What happened was the talent didn’t want to use condoms. As a result, we decided to go condom optional.”

Abdullah Simsek, a Bolton restaurant owner, known as Apo, first came into the limelight last year after he was constantly mistaken for the actor, but now his newfound fame and accompanying attention from women has cost him his wife.

“My wife thinks I’m going to be famous now and I am heading off to Hollywood. I don’t think I’ve changed but she thinks I have. Because of this, we have separated after 14 years of marriage, so I am back to being single,” the Telegraph quoted him as saying.

But for the 43-year-old, being single means that he will have more chances of meeting his dream girl, model and television presenter Lisa Snowdon.

“It is my dream to meet Lisa, she is a very beautiful lady. It would be a wonderful thing if she were to walk into my restaurant,” he said.

Simsek used to run a kebab shop in Bolton, but has now opened a Spanish restaurant, La Salsa, on the town’s Bridge Street.

But he’ll be leaving behind the tapas next month to head to Hollywood to try to be signed up as a Clooney look-a-like.

He hopes for a meeting with Clooney’s agent Stan Rosenfield and has already rejected the advances of a London agency in a bid to further his career in the US.

“I’m going to Hollywood to try my luck. Everybody keeps telling me I’m wasting my talent, and I have been told that I’m the best Clooney look-alike there is. Wherever I go people say to me ‘Clooney, Clooney’,” he stated.

“But I’m not interested in making lots of money, that’s not what I’m after. I’m only after Lisa Snowdon,” he added.

Kenneth Lea was put behind bars for 12 weeks on 17 charges involving more than 51 specialist birds.

The 50-year-old fell under the court scanner after officials at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) received a tip about the “filthy” conditions, reports Contactmusic.

The creatures, including owls, falcons and hawks at his farm in Bradford, England, were found in an emaciated state and plastered in blood and dirt.

Thirdly Macpherson does not want to be skinny, she is happy to have a few extra pounds on her body.

“A few pounds show a lot on my body but it’s OK. I believe women look good with a bit of softness to them,” the model once said. Although she’s very slim, Macpherson always kept her curves during her modelling career, which is probably why she’s so fit now.

“If you yo-yo diet or starve yourself, your metabolism suffers greatly,” says nutritionist Carina Norris.

“It catches up with you in later life and you’ll find it harder to keep a steady weight. It’s far better to eat well and move around a bit instead of messing with your metabolism,” she added.

Fourthly, Macpherson believes in her organic diet, and even says so. “I would encourage everyone to give it a go,” she said.  Studies show that organic food contains more nutrients – and the more nutrients your body absorbs, the less hungry it feels, however, it can be pricey, so just add the odd organic item to your basket when you can.

Fifthly, she likes to meditate, as it allows her to take time out to focus on her mind. “Keeping stress at bay is one of the best things you can do for your body and waistline,” Duigan said.

She got me doing them so I would hop down and do ten or so (push-ups) before a scene to just kind of break a little bit of a sweat. She would bop down and do fifteen and she started upping it every single time,” he argued.

“Its more mental actually than physical for when you are doing it on a daily basis when I am working. It’s just about a little physical excursion – kind of loosens up my brain and helps me be more creative,” he added.

“They have often laughed about those old embarrassing outfits and how awful they were to wear,” the Daily Star quoted an insider, as saying.

“But it looks like Robbie and the rest of the guys might dust them off for one last time just to give their fans a thrill.

A series of discounting, special packages and a major season of new productions and star names are set to attract millions of tourists to London. Big hitting stars and large scale musicals are lined up to showcase a range of new productions, including performances by Jude Law, Helen Mirren, Ethan Hawke, Gillian Anderson and Ian McKellen.

In drama, one of the most high profile productions will be Jude Law, taking to the stage in Shakespeare’s most famous play, Hamlet, directed by Michael Grandage as part of his Donmar in the West End season, from 29 May at the Wyndham’s Theatre.

Helen Mirren will also return to the London stage in Racine’s tragic play Phedre at the National Theatre, and stage legends Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart are reunited after their onscreen roles in the X-Men movies to perform Waiting for Godot at the Haymarket Theatre from 20 April.

Talents from New York and London will converge at The Old Vic from 23 May for The Bridge Project – a three year partnership between The Old Vic, the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Neal Street Productions. Academy Award-winning director Sam Mendes will direct a new version of The Cherry Orchard plus Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale, in a cast that features Ethan Hawke, Simon Russell Beale, Sinead Cusack and recent star of Woody Allen’s Vicky Christina Barcelona, Rebecca Hall.

Other notable players making their way to London include Gillian Anderson, who will star in Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House at the Donmar Warehouse, joining a stellar cast that includes former Doctor Who Christopher Eccleston, Toby Stephens, Tara Fitzgerald and Anton Lesser. Musical theatre is firmly “based on a film” this year as a blockbuster stage production of Sister Act joins a West End brimming with adaptations of movies, including recent new show Priscilla Queen of the Desert starring Jason Donovan and long-runners such as Hairspray and Dirty Dancing. Running from 7 May at the London Palladium, Sister Act is produced by the film’s original star Whoopi Goldberg and features Sheila Hancock and rising star Patina Miller, with music courtesy of Alan Menken (Disney’s Beauty & The Beast).

Other movie-to-stage shows on the horizon include the Broadway production of Legally Blond opening at the Savoy Theatre at the end of the year and a stage adaptation of Oscar winning film Ghost, directed by Matthew Warchus, set for 2010. Chief amongst the new musicals opening in London in the later part of 2009 will be Andrew Lloyd Webber’s world premiere of The Phantom of the Opera sequel Love Never Dies at the Adelphi Theatre in early November. The show is set to star current London Phantom Ramin Karimloo and will follow its London opening with productions in Toronto, Shanghai and Broadway.

A number of shows that have run successfully in other venues are also making their way into the West End including the acclaimed production of Steven Sondheim’s A Little Night Music starring Maureen Lipman at the Garrick Theatre, and smash-hit Broadway musical Spring Awakening – in a new UK production at the Novello Theatre. Katona, 28, had apparently put the implants up on the auction site to raise funds for charity breastcancercampaign.org, but now they have been removed due to too many legal issues.

“The implant was on eBay and I believe the idea was to raise money for Breast Cancer Campaign,” Fox News quoted a rep for the charity as saying.

“However eBay have now taken the item off because people were putting fake bids in, 8 million pounds at one point,” the rep said.

But eBay has revealed that it wasn’t the bogus bidders that caused the items to be removed, and that it was actually Katona who broke the rules.

“Our policy team weighed in and said that this auction was removed for the Charity Violation contained within the item description as there was no letter of written consent by eBay’s Office of the President to allow the item to be sold under our Charity guidelines,” an eBay rep said.

Katona had initially announced the auction on her Facebook page, but she never informed the charity of her plans to donate the proceeds to it.

“We have no idea what her plans are as it wasn’t something we knew about until we saw the media coverage,” the Breast Cancer Campaign rep stated.

“She isn’t someone we have been in contact with before so this story just appeared out of the blue. She has also just announced that she’s getting divorced so she’s probably got other things to worry about,” the rep added. (ANI)

The sixth adventure in the Harry Potter series sees Daniel Radcliffe as adolescent wizard Harry, learning to crush his enemy Voldemort.

According to disappointed fans, the film, due to be released on July 17, made key characters and plot-lines vanish from author J K Rowling’s best-seller.

“The film is dominated by romance – Ron with Lavender Brown, Ginny with Dean Thomas, Hermione’s growing love for Ron, Ron’s potion-affected desire for Romilda Vane, and ultimately Harry and Ginny,” the Sun quoted a fan as saying.

Another one said: “Anyone who has read the book will be severely disappointed.”

Scenes in the movie, particularly the death of a major character, left fans enraged with the way it was handled.

A fan said: “It partially blows what may be the biggest surprise of the entire franchise.”

Another one added: “The last third of this movie is so incredibly mishandled the death feels more like an unfortunate accident than genuine tragedy.” (ANI)

MGMT, formerly known as The Management, claim that Sarkozy’s UMP party used the track ‘Kids’ at its national congress and in two online videos.

The political party admitted to using it by saying that it was a mistake, and they tried to rectify the matter by offering a symbolic gesture of one euro.

But the offering has been seen as an insult, and MGMT’s French lawyer Isabelle Wekstein has rejected it.

“This offer is disrespectful of the rights of artists and authors. It is insulting,” the BBC quoted her as saying.

“We are dealing with acts of counterfeiting, an infringement of intellectual property,” she said.

Wekstein said that the party paid a standard 53-euro fee to the French music licensing body, and claimed that the amount was not enough to cover subsequent uses of the rock track, particularly on the web.

The row comes a week before the French parliament starts examining a new law championed by Sarkozy’s party, pushing for tougher penalties for online piracy and file-sharing on the internet. (ANI)
