Disney introduces its first American African Princess Tiana

Disney has introduced its ninth animated princess after 70years and first American African princess ever! Snow White was the first to be launched by Disney and here comes the ninth… Tiana.

Disney named the movie as “The Princess and the Frog” which is loosely based on the classic fairy tale by E.D. Baker “The Frog Princess.” The animated movie is by Disney’s CG-animated producer powerhouse Pixar who had earlier given films like “Cars” and “Toy Story”.

It is directed by Ron Clements and Jon Musker and written by Ron Clements, Rob Edwards, Greg Erb, Jon Clements, and Jason Oremland. Anika Noni Rose is voice casted as Tiana while Bruno Campos is Prince Naveen.

The story goes like this…

Tiana (Rose) is the daughter of a working class seamstress, Eudora (Oprah Winfrey), and a gumbo chef, James (Terence Howard). Tiana dreams of opening a restaurant as she is good in cooking. James encourages Tiana to follow her dream working hard. After her dad passes away, Tiana works very hard working two jobs as a waitress to save up money for a down payment of a space to open the restaurant she and her father wanted. Tiana doesn’t have much time to enjoy or attempt to start a family and give Eudora some grandchildren.

Then comes Prince Naveen (Campos)! He is a crown prince of Macedonia who is thrown out of his family and needs to marry a rich heiress so that he can get back to his carefree lifestyle. Naveen is trapped by the villain Dr. Facilier (Keith David), the voodoo master. He takes on Naveen and his servant Lawrence (Peter Barlett) convincing them for a deal to take over the city himself.

Tiana meets Naveen at a party thrown by her friends Big Daddy (John Goodman) and his daughter Charlotte (Jennifer Cody). She wishes on a star and meets Naveen who is now turned a frog! Naveen insists her to kiss him as per the idea from the fairy tale “Frog Prince” that he had found in Charlotte’s bedroom.

Tiana kisses Naveen thinking that once he gets back his human form, he might pay for her restaurant that she had lost to the realtors and also that he would marry Charlotte. But hold… Tiana turns to a frog this time!

The story goes on with both the characters…umm… frogs try to run from Facilier who needs Naveen’s blood to get his job done. In the meantime, they befriend the alligator Louis (Michael-Leon Wooley). It is Louis who brings forth the idea that the three will find the Voodoo priestess, Mama Odie (Jenifer Lewis), so that they all can get back human form and fulfill their desires.

As usual a cute story by Disney! The duration is 97 minutes and it doesn’t go huge lengths to reveal many sequences. Randy Newman’s music is cool with jazz beats and tunes. This is an old fashioned Disney music with lots of songs.

The new movie by Disney proves that a 2-D movie is still relevant and can look stunning and perfect visually. Hats off to the animators and his crew who pulled off some amazing animation tricks which are awesome and beyond any complements!
