DXM or Dextromethorphan: What is it?

With the death of Pop Star Michael Jackson coming into scanner as involving the usage of Pain Killing drugs, it has become important to know about these drugs and their harmful side effects.
Dextromethorphan or DXM is one such drug. It is one of the active ingredients used to prevent coughs in many over-the-counter cold and cough medicines. Dextromethorphan has also found other uses in medicine, ranging from pain relief to psychological applications. It is sold in syrup, tablet, and lozenge forms manufactured under several different brand names and generic labels.
Side-effects of dextromethorphan use can include nausea, drowsiness, fever, vomiting etc. At doses higher than medically recommended, dextromethorphan is classified as a dissociative psychedelic drug, with visible effects that are similar to those of ketamine and phencyclidine (PCP). It can produce distortions of the visual field, feelings of dissociation, distortions of bodily perception, excitement, as well as a loss of comprehension of time.
