Earthquake measuring 4.3 shakes up Northern Illinois!
As per the latest reports, it is learned that a moderate earthquake, measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale, struck Northern Illinois this morning.
On the evidence of further updates from the U.S Geological Survey, it appears that the quake reportedly centered at DeKalb County and shook up an estimated area of about 50 miles west-northwest of downtown Chicago.
It is further known that the moderate tremors had an epicenter about three miles underground and as per feeds from the USGS, the quake struck between the towns of Virgil and Sycamore.
USGS geophysicist Amy Vaughn was further quoted as saying that the earthquake hit the western suburbs at around 3:59 a.m, about five miles east of Sycamore, or about 4 miles west/northwest from Virgil.
While Amy described the quake as a routine seismic event, she said she was flooded with calls from concerned natives from the affected areas saying, “It’s (The calls) mostly from people who said ‘we woke up and we thought we were going crazy. Mostly it’s rattling people awake. It’s going to be very widely felt.”
As per a report carried by CNN, it appears that several viewers called in from the affected area, saying that though their homes shook severely from the impact of the quake, there are no reports of any major damage or casualties.
Doug Dupont of Belvidere, Illinois, which is situated about 70 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, called up CNN to say that the tremors shook him out of sleep and left a 1 foot long crack on his kitchen wall.
Doug further said, “It was really scary. It felt like a train was going by our house. This is not California. This is northern Illinois. We are not supposed to get earthquakes.”
While there is no news of any major damage or casualties from the quake, the Northern Illinois natives would surely be living in fear of aftershocks.

I also felt an earth tremor somewhere around 4 a.m., this morning, Wednesday, February 10. I live in Arlington Heights, Illinois, which is in Cook County. I wondered if I might have been dreaming, with so much of the Haiti tragedy on my mind. But I found a blog saying someone else had felt it. Was it 4.3 magnitude?
