Ishqiya: Is it Vidya Balan’s most challenging role?

Ishqiya, a Bollywood film that captures romance, passion, greed and betrayal in an enthralling way, has Vidya Balan in her most challenging role in her career, thus far. She plays an illiterate widow of a rural background who is used to mouthing all the desi abuses including the most explicit slangs. Now, Vidya, who has, hitherto, played a softer character, be it her classic role of ‘Parineeta’ or a traditional Indian girl of ‘Hey Baby’, this role will present her in a different light, all together.

The plot of the movie revolves around two uncle-nephew dacoits (played by the veteran Naseeruddin Shah & the talented Arshad Vaarsi) who flee from the clutches of their boss Mushtaq (essayed by Salman Shahid) & take refuge in their old pal’s house where they stay with the widow Vidya and, as time rolls on, fall for her. Their lust for Vidya turns to imminent desire that ensures a silent war between the two. The movie is set in the landscapes of eastern Uttar Pradesh and promises to be a gripping drama. Without question, Vidya had to take on a completely different semblance for the role and had to overcome initial jitters of delivering the abusive dialogues. The film also has some, really, steamy scenes between Vidya & Arshad including a passionate lip-lock.

So, the spectators are in for a surprise this season, as they will witness a totally-deglamorised Vidya in her rural avataar with the choicest of abuses as her major attire.
