There is just no stopping this guy. In fact he is such a player that it feels like the competition is for the second place. Mauer was above the point of competition this year. He almost won the MVP award unanimously when he received 27 out of 28 votes.
He got 387 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, while Yankees teammates Mark Teixeira (225 points) and Derek Jeter (193) followed. Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera drew the other first-place vote and was fourth with 171 points, one point ahead of the Angels’ Kendry Morales.
Justin Morneau was the first one to win the 2009 mlb MVP from Twins and Mauer became the second. Morneau was so excited that he gave Joe Mauer a bottle of champagne Monday at the Metrodome and said “Hopefully we can pop that open here a little later.”
“I love catching. I love the demands that are put on me and the responsibilities that I have, although it might beat you up a little bit physically and mentally,” Mauer said. “I like being back there making those decisions, you know, for my team.”
