Lynda La Plante’s comments raised eyebrows at The Specsavers Crime Thriller Awards

Lynda La Plante is an English author, screenwriter and former actress, best known for writing the Prime Suspect television crime series. Recently, in an outburst against the growing trend of celebrity novels, Lynda La Plante, the senior member of crime fiction, has hit out at glamour model Katie Price, insisting she’s terrible thing for young girls.

The comments from La Plante, who has written best-sellers including Above Suspicion and the scripts of the Prime Suspect, which starred Dame Helen Mirren, raised eyebrows at The Specsavers Crime Thriller Awards.

The Awards function was held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, in Mayfair where La Plante was invited to the Hall of Fame. “Publishers, stop spending your millions on this tripe,” the Telegraph quoted her as saying.

“The publishing industry is going to implode. They can’t pay the millions to these celebrities. If we don’t cut through the dross, this trite tripe… these reality TV writers who are here for their 15 minutes of fame.”

“Katie Price’s book outsold the Booker Prize list. She’s a terrible thing for young girls who just want pink welly boots,” she added. The awards ceremony was attended by Martine McCutcheon, the former East Enders actress.

Her debut novel, The Mistress, will be published next month. Since the first chapter of McCutcheon’s debut novel was posted online recently by publisher Pan Macmillan, her authorial skills have been completely trashed.

It was nothing compared to the critique handed out by author La Plante. La Plante said: “I have nothing against Martine McCutcheon, but who knows what she was paid.” One can get the impression that La Plante’s writing skills leads her to fame.

Lynda La Plant’s critisism of today’s publishers was true and to the piont. You only have to look at the book shelves in any Waterstone or W.H.Smith’s and all you see are so called celebrities on every book cover staring back at you.
There is massive lack of investment in the encouraging and developing of new literary tallent with little if any support at all by british book publishers.
Good on you Lynda, tell it as it is and maybe just maybe someone will take notice.
