New Bond film name ‘Quantum of Solace’ was Daniel Craig’s idea

Daniel Craig has revealed that he suggested the title ‘Quantum of Solace’ for the new Bond film.
During a brainstorming session with the film’s producers, the James Bond star rejected more conventional titles.
‘Quantum of Solace’ is the name of a little-known short story included in Ian Fleming’s 1960 collection, and it was announced as the title of the 22nd Bond adventure last year.
“Names were coming out, some ludicrous stuff was going back and forth – I can’t remember exactly, but you know the sort of thing: ‘The Blood On Your Face’. I knew I didn’t want ‘death’, ‘die’, ‘bleed’ or any of those things in the title,” the Telegraph quoted him, as telling GQ.
“We had it written down on boards and we’d literally go and sit in rooms and stare at this title. If you look at ‘Q’s, they’re really weird in a title.
“As soon as it came out, people were saying, ‘Ooh, it sounds like Harry Potter.’ No, it’s Quantum of Solace. I was saying, ‘It’s a Bond title! The name of a Bond film is not about anything. Live And Let Die? Octopussy? What does it mean? It means very little. We’ve got nothing to worry about,” he added.
The makers of the film have dispensed with Fleming’s original plot and retained only the name, which refers to ‘the smallest unit of compassion that two people can have’. (ANI)

With RISICO, QUANTUM OF SOLACE, and
THE PROPERTY OF A LADY the only Ian Fleming James Bond (short) story titles unused by EON Productions, in what will be their 46-year film series when BOND 22 is finally released in November 2008, it makes me wonder what the odds are that the filmmakers will use one of these three titles or invent one of their own. With hackneyed titles in the past like Licence To Kill, Tomorrow Never Dies, and Die Another Day, I hope that after the enormous success of Casino Royale the filmmakers will return to Fleming and use QUANTUM OF SOLACE.
It seems to me that this is just about all that Bond will have when he’s tracked down and killed the bad guys that form Ellipsis and who he no doubt sees as ultimately responsible for Vesper Lynd’s death.Graham Rye
