Now, software that can reproduce images in dreams on screen

Japanese scientists have created a device that may one day make thoughts and dreams during the sleep appear on a computer screen.

Those behind the technology have revealed that, presently, it can process thoughts and dreams to produce simple images from the brain.

They insist that their work has opened the doors for the ability to unlock people’s dreams and other brain processes.

“It was the first time in the world that it was possible to visualise what people see directly from the brain activity,” the Telegraph quoted a spokesman at ATR Computational Neuroscience Laboratories as saying.

“By applying this technology, it may become possible to record and replay subjective images that people perceive like dreams,” he added.

Yukiyaso Kamitani, lead researcher on the project, revealed that the team focused on the image recognition procedures in the retina of the human eye.

The researchers did so because the eye’s retina recognises an image while looking at an object, converts it into electrical signals, and then sends them into the brain’s visual cortex.

The purpose of the study, published in the journal Neuron, was to probe how electrical signals are captured and reconstructed into images.

For the experiment, some testers were shown the six letters of the word “neuron”.

The researchers later used the technology to measure their brain activity, subsequently reconstructing the letters on a computer screen. (ANI)
