Roger Ebert’s Top 10 Movies of Last Decade !
Roger Ebert, the ace movie critic, and also prestigious Pulitzer has come up with another list. And the list is “top ten movies of last decade”. Now, it is obvious that this list will contain some very serious stuff. So, it will be a disappointment for those who are more in commercial cinema. The list goes like this:
10. My Winnipeg (2008): this is a lesser known drama about the director’s, Guy Maddin, home town Winnipeg. Known for its unique realistic approach, with a shade of documentary, it’s the No. 10 movie in his list.
9. Almost Famous (2000). : The Oscar winner in Best Writing, Screenplay category, it was quite a pleasant drama. A boy gets a chance to write for Rolling Stone magazine about a new rock band. Though, the magazine owners don’t know that the boy is just 15. It turns out a life time experience, when the boy accompanies the band.
8. The 25th Hour (2003): Directed by the brilliant Spike Lee (Do the Right Thing fame), it’s an engaging crime drama about the last 25 hours of Edward Norton (American history X fame), before he gets sentenced for a 7 year imprisonment. The 24 hours in which he reevaluates his life.
7. The Son (2002): From the great Director Jean-Pierre Dardenne, here comes a drama, where a carpenter refuses to take a boy as an apprentice, but he becomes so much obsessed that he starts spying that boy.
6. Chop Shop (2008): it is a story of an orphan adolescent boy, who lives in the outskirts of New York, and works as a mechanic, tries to survive in a world of “adults”. It is a beautiful and poignant tale of an orphan by the renowned director Ramin Bahrani.
5. Me and You and Everyone We Know (2005): this is a story about a performance artist & a shoe salesman’s love and different problems. Winner of 4 awards in Cannes festival including Golden Camera.
4. Juno (2007): a delightful comedy drama about teenage pregnancy. Ellen page, in the title role, gave a brilliant performance, & landed with an Oscar nomination, whereas the movie went ahead with winning an Oscar for Best Screenplay.
3. Monster (2004): it established Charlize Theron as a brilliant actor. She played the character of a prostitute, who, under some circumstances, becomes a serial killer. She won an Oscar for her performance.
2. The Hurt Locker (2009): Arguably this year’s one of best movies, and a big threat to Inglorious Bastards in the Oscar run. It is a story about a bomb squad, and their everyday tryst with death, in war wrecked Iraq.
1. Synecdoche, New York (2008) : Directed by Charlie Kaufman, this lesser known movie tops Mr. Ebert’s list. A story about an obsessed play director who, for his play, builds a whole replica of Synecdoche, inside his warehouse. Certainly, one of the finest movies, & it shows an unforgettable performance by Philip Seymour Hoffman.
