Santa’s sleigh driver was seriously injured after being punched to the ground by an angry man who complained that he was singing Christmas carols too loudly.
Glen MacDonald had his chest bone broken and car door dented as the group stopped on the corner of Stephen’s Road and Upper Dunstan Road to collect donations.
The 72-year-old, who tows the Father Christmas sleigh around the town every festive season, said: “This man came out shouting and swearing for us to be quiet and stop singing carols because we were too loud.”
“He knocked me down with a punch to my chest. I was badly winded. The other Lions came to my aid, to fend him off, but Santa was a bit immobile because he was in his outfit,” the
Telegraph quoted him, as adding.
MacDonald, a retired company director had been with the Lions for 25 years, contributing to accumulate money for local charities in the area.
“I wasn’t expecting to be punched like that. For him to be behaving in such a manner he had to be very drunk or a nutter,” MacDonald said.
“Nothing like this has ever happened to me before. The blow was right where I had the operation so I was very worried,” he added.
Disheartened by the incident, MacDonald revealed the attacker has ruined his Christmas plans.
“I went to A&E and they said it was a cracked sternum. It means I might not be able to drive my wife and daughter to see my son’s newly born twins in York this Christmas,” MacDonald
added. (ANI)
