Shah Rukh Khan’s My Name is Khan: A copy of Forrest Gump?
Once, in an interview, Shah Rukh Khan has said that if given a chance he would like to make and work in ‘Forrest Gump’, because its one of his all time favorite movies.
Now, next week, his movie My Name is Khan (MNIK) is going to release. You may not get to hear it from anyone, but, from the very first day MNIK’s promo came on TV, I have a strong feeling that it is somewhat inspired from the Forrest Gump, the 1994 Oscar sweeper, and one of the finest movie ever made. I know its kind of ‘allegation’, because this movie is yet to release, that is why I was refraining from writing this article, but now, I am throwing the ball in your court, and decide whether I am right or wrong. Just read on:
# Shah Rukh suffers from Asperger syndrome, a disability in which a person is not able to socialize with others. In FG too, Tom Hanks was mentally disturbed.
# In the promo of MNIK, it is shown how he proposes Kajol, whom he loved, but there was some hiccups. Similarly, Tom Hanks used to think that he was not that smart, so he also felt shy in proposing her.
# Tom has a weird accent in it (rather let me rephrase) due to the disability, he had some problem in talking and expressing himself. Similar thing is shown in MNIK promo where somewhat stammers.
# Shah Rukh is shown running blindly to meet the US president. In FG Tom Hanks run is world famous (run Forrest run!!), and moreover Forrest he meets JFK.
The biggest thing is the feel of the movie, which I cant explain in words, but it does remind Forrest Gump. I would like to make it clear that no one can recreate the magic of Forrest Gump, forget Karan Johar. Let’s wait for the next Friday; truth will come out before everyone.

Don’t u know? Bollywood doesn’t blatantly copy western movies….they are all “inspired” from them, give or take 95% frame by frame copy. But ur right about one thing, I too am anxious to see how this movie will fare next week. “3 Idiots” is the first truly indian movie that’s come out of India in a long long time and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Now let’s see what the other side has to offer.
Truth already left. And I did not read such delirium if to forget about Shiv Sena! If you such expert probably have to know that Gamp did not have a syndrome of Asperger. I paraphrase your “clever” phrase. That Henks never can repeat magic of Shahrukha, Henks the fine actor, but Shahrukh unique. Only idiots go to the cinema then to cry out only WOW it copies Gamp I advise, do not waste time because you have already made the conclusions at all without having looked a film!
@ Daken – have you heard of Five Point Somone by Chetan Bhagat? Then you’d know that 3 Idiots is based on a book – hence it’s not a true Indian movie. It’s a fantastic one though
@ the author – Do you know that it’s also based on a love story between a muslim and a hindu, the treatment of muslims after 9-11, the horrors of humanity in the form of terrorism. Does this sound like Forrest Grump? No. Stop nitpicking the smallest of details and making a mountain of nonsense out of them.
well done Viktoriya! agreed with you.
actually neither KJ nor SRK are copiers, guys like him are inspired by western movies.
Well, lemme go out on a limb here and confess that the moment I saw Rizwan Khan walking on that long road in the middle of nowhere heading towards an unknown direction, I exclaimed alound, “Forrest Gump!”
Having said that, I truly believe that no fiction stands alone. Originality in story-telling is a myth most people like to believe, but originality doesn’t exist in the world of fiction. Why? Coz people need something they’re familiar with in order to connect to a story, and even if you make a movie about blue aliens living on a planet in another universe, the emotions..plots..issues must still be anchored here on earth to make it stick.
I dunno what else to say but that you won’t be able to enjoy this movie, or any movie really, if you insist to watch it as a critic. Maybe you can analyse it to death when the DVD comes out?
Good luck enjoying My Name is Khan! ^^
@S
by saying “3 idiots” was the first truly indian movie what i meant was they did not resort to lavish productions with models and foreign locales. Even the characters names were indian and I liked the fact that the movie made several attempts at using Hindhi at it’s core as a dialogue device. Really don’t understand why some producers travel halfway around the world just to shoot a 5 minute song in a 3 hour movie when there is so much beauty in India, the scenery and locations in “3 idiots” prove that.
