Hollywood icon Meryl Streep used to pad her bra to catch the eye of casting directors and land film roles.

The double Oscar-winner further explained that her “boosting” actions didn’t go unnoticed as her fake curves persuaded late movie maker Sydney Pollack to cast her in critically acclaimed Out of Africa, reports Contactmusic.

She said: “I have cheated to get a part. The first time I was on Broadway years ago. Before the audition I filled my 32DD bra cups with paper towels.

“I got the part! I did it again to Sydney Pollack for Out of Africa.

“I’d heard he didn’t think I was sexy enough so I filled them up again.” (ANI)

American actress Meryl Streep has vowed not to wear any designer dresses to the awards but to stick with her own outfits for luck.

Streep had refused to wear a designer dress to the recent Screen Actor’s Guild Awards and picked out one of her own instead, and she was surprised when she won the Best Actress award for her role in ‘Doubt’.

Now keeping that in mind, the actress is convinced that wearing one of her own dresses will aid her in winning an award at the Oscar this month, where she has been nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award.

"I’ll never buy a dress again," Contactmusic quoted her as saying. (ANI)

Melissa Leo : Melissa Leo likens Oscar preparation to wedding

American actress Melissa Leo, who has been nominated for an Oscar, has revealed that preparing for the awards day makes her feel like she is getting ready for her own wedding.

Leo, 48, has been nominated for her role in the movie ‘Frozen River’, and will be competing for the Best Actress gong on February 22 with actresses Angelina Jolie, Kate Winslet, Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway.

“Getting ready feels like the wedding I’ve never had,” the Daily Star quoted her as telling the New York Post.

But, despite looking forward to the glitzy awards show, the actress isn’t confident she will walk away with the revered industry honour.

“I have no anxiety as I really am genuinely surprised by this nomination and have no expectation of taking home a golden statue,” she added. (ANI)

Veteran Hollywood star Meryl Streep has revealed that her daughters have helped her to stop worrying about her appearance over the years.

The ‘Rendition’ actress , who will be 60 in June, said that her daughters urged her to stop worrying about “tiny things” as she is charming in her own way.

“I wasted so many years thinking I wasn’t pretty enough and why didn’t I have Jessica Lange’s body or someone else’s legs? What a waste of time,” the Telegraph quoted Streep, as telling Radio Times magazine.

“Now I’m enjoying the tatters of what’s left and I’m very happy. Part of it is having beautiful strong daughters and hearing them whine about what’s wrong with them,” she said.

“I’m like, “Shut up! You’re lovely!” she added. (ANI)

Actress Meryl Streep was sure that ‘Mamma Mia!’ would turn out to be a big hit because it catered to audience that has been largely “neglected” in films-the women.

‘Mamma Mia!’, the ABBA-themed musical was one of the biggest grosser in 2008, raking in an estimated 573 million dollars worldwide.

However, the movie’s success didn’t really surprise Oscar winning actress Streep as it was a film that “neglected” female moviegoers could finally relate to.

“I know the studio is gobsmacked by its success and a lot of the critics have been surprised, but I wasn’t. It was a no brainer,” Contactmusic quoted Streep as saying.

She added: “I knew it would do well because it was aimed at an audience that has been neglected in recent years in film offerings: women. They are the last group anybody ever cares about.” (ANI)

Oscar-winner Meryl Streep has slammed show business for its prejudice against those beginning to wrinkle.

The actress revealed that she had herself encountered ageism in the industry but would continue to challenge the discrimination.

“Of course there is ageism in the film industry. There’s discrimination in every profession,” the Telegraph quoted her as saying at the London opening of her new film, ‘Doubt’.

“Look around the room. There are a lot of young women here who are journalists, but do you see any women my age? No.

“And if you look into the corporate corners of your company, there aren’t a lot of women there either. But we’re fighting that, and we’re making inroads against discrimination,” she added. (ANI)

Media mogul Oprah Winfrey has revealed that the director of ‘Doubt’ turned her down for a role in the film.

While chatting with ‘Doubt’ actress Meryl Streep on her talk show, Oprah revealed that she was keen to act with her in the flick but John Patrick Shanley didn’t find her suitable.

Billionaire Oprah auditioned for the role of “Mrs. Miller”, who breaks down after hearing her son may have been molested by a priest, reports US Weekly.

The role eventually went to Viola Davis, who was later nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe. (ANI)

Hollywood actress Kate Winslet got so emotional during her Golden Globes acceptance speech that she failed to remember Angelina Jolie’s name while acknowledging her fellow nominees.

The 33-year-old actress walked way with two Golden Globe gongs for Best Actress for Revolutionary Road and Best Supporting Actress for The Reader.

While accepting the Best actress award Winslet remembered nominees Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep and Kristin Scott Thomas – but forgot the ‘Changeling’ star.

“I’m so sorry Anne, Meryl, Kristin – and who’s the other one? Angelina. Now forgive me, is this really happening?” the Telegraph quoted her as saying.

She gave a special thanks to her ‘Revolutionary Road’ co-star Leonardo DiCaprio, who played her on-screen husband, saying: “I have loved you with all my heart.”

She also thanked her husband, Sam Mendes, for directing Revolutionary Road, which features a sex scene with DiCaprio.

“Thank you for killing us every single day,” she told Mendes “I loved every second of working with you,” she added. (ANI)

Cancer telethon for Streep, Theron and Aniston

Hollywood actresses Meryl Streep, Charlize Theron and Jennifer Aniston are set to appear in a Stand Up To Cancer telethon in an attempt to raise money for cancer research and treatment.

The live fundraising broadcast will be simultaneously shown on US TV networks ABC, CBS and NBC on September 5.

Other celebrities to appear on the telethon include Scarlett Johansson, Christina Applegate, America Ferrera and Sally Field, reports China Daily..

“As a motion picture and television producer, I’ve learned how incredibly powerful these mediums can be in generating public discourse, sometimes almost overnight. Our goal with this initiative and TV show is to ‘tip’ the conversation in this country about cancer – to get people riled up, so they want to do something about the fact that it still takes so many lives,” Cancer survivor and producer of the telethon, Laura Ziskin was quoted as saying.

Raymond N DuBois, Executive Vice President at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, added: “The Stand Up To Cancer model is distinctive because it emphasises collaboration among scientists and will accelerate translational research on the verge of breakthroughs as well as provide an additional revenue stream to encourage novel, high-risk proposals that have great potential in making inroads against cancer.” (ANI)

Actress Meryl Streep gives credit to her daughter for bagging the ‘Mama Mia’ role. The 59-year-old actress credits her youngest daughter, Louisa, for transforming her into an all-singing ‘Dancing Queen’ in Mamma Mia. Streep revealed that seven years ago she had taken her “six screaming 11-year-olds” to see the Broadway version of the musical for Louisa’s birthday.

“I thought it would be fun for them,” The Daily Record quoted her, as saying. She admitted that she enjoyed herself so much, she wrote the cast a fan letter, which went to show founder Phyllida Lloyd, writer Catherine Johnson and producer Judy Craymer.

So when they decided to make for the silver screen they asked Streep if she was interested. “They called and said, ‘You probably won’t be interested but we’d love you to do this.’ “I said, ‘Are you crazy? I would love to do this.’ It was a done deal,” she added. (ANI)
